This photo was taken from the hill behind our house, probably in January when the jacaranda tree was in flower. On the right may be seen K Road cottage behind its garage.
When our house was built in 1981 this was all just a bare paddock. The big hedge to right of the house is tarata (Lemonwood) and three very large Gleditzia trees which serve as a very effective windbreak from the chilly southerlies. This hedge is also thick with self-seeded nikau trees and kawakawa. The tall dark green tree in front is a double-trunked kauri tree that I planted when it was knee-high approximately 20-odd years ago.
The river is out of sight, just behind the roof of the cottage.
