Pukerangatira (Limestone Hill)
This limestone hill is situated in the forestry at Rangi Point and is clearly visible from the south side of Hokianga Harbour. Now that the forestry has been cleared around its base, it is easier to drive quite close to the hill and not get lost. There is no clearly marked track from where you leave your vehicle to the summit and the ‘walk’ involves deep truck ruts, soft sand, patches of scrub – teatree, gorse, pampas grass - and then a steeper climb on loose limestone to the summit. Probably about half an hour from vehicle to summit, and care is needed ascending and descending the crumbly limestone slopes. However, the views of the harbour and surrounds make your efforts really worthwhile.
